I am endlessly fascinated by the moods of nature evoked by the ever-changing light and the turning of the seasons.
My paintings draw upon my experience with direct observation while painting outdoors, but they also depend on
memory and imagination to organize elements into a cohesive whole. I have great respect for the nearly 200-year-old American landscape tradition, which has its origins in this region, but I am interested in a
fresh universal vision that speaks to our own times. — James Gurney
